Less Human Than Human

I read a story today about an adult male German Shepherd whose leash was attached to the rear of a car as he was dragged around the Colorado National Monument.

"tracks left in the snow tell the story. they initially show the dog walking, then running and then being dragged over about 3 miles up steep and winding Rim Rock Drive. The dog was left near the first tunnel on the west side of the park"

I've shared my life with several German Shepherds, and I experienced a variety of emotions upon learning of this tragic event. By far, the most overwhelming feeling was extreme anger towards the person who obviously cares so little for life. I strongly believe any person capable of animal neglect/abuse is just as capable of committing the same against a person. I sincerely hope the offenders of this dastardly deed are caught and severely punished.

HiYa~ Well here is to bringing in a Bright, Happy, Safe and WEALTHY 2010! Many of us are saying goodbye to several misfortunes this past year from losing jobs, foreclosing on homes and just generally ending dead end things. With that said I always say KARMA KARMA KARMA, so if we all put some good vibes and thoughts out there for 2010 I am sure it will come back to us in a positive way! The one thing I can't stand about a new year is that we all have to remember to put the new year on our date line when writing out checks:) I always forget and end up voiding them or changing them LOL! Hope you have a Bright New Year in 2010!

How'd ya Do?

Hoping everybody had a great Christmas! Kids seemed to love it and that is always the big thing for me. We went to see Avatar at the IMAX Christmas Day. OH MY GAWD! That is easily one of the coolest movies I have ever seen! It will still be a great movie when it comes out on DVD, but everybody should make an effort to go see it on the big screen in 3D while they can! Rock On! Coda

Remember y2k??

and wow..things were gonna get dicey at midnight 12/31/99...because it didn;t say 1999..
computers might go haywire..ATMs would stop dispensing cash..traffic signals would start
flashing out of time..maybe even the entire electric grid would stop functioning..

then a funny thing happened on 12/01/2001...nothing. yep. nothing. maybe a glitch here or there but for the most part nothing. great hype though..a lot of unnecessary worry too. something the media circus is really good at.

so now we sit on the verge of a new decade. no worries about technology failures this time. no.this time it is a bit more old skool. worries about jobs. the economy. the two wars that continue to drag on and on...a political structure that seems incapable of doing much, and a lot of , well ...unrest out there. to me, these don't seem like things we should be dwelling on in 2009. or maybe, we should have been thinking sbout some of these things a lot more than we did.

starting with 2010 and the next decade could be the time for re-examining what is important and what should be priorities . and that is a lot better than being scared of Y2k ...

join me for decades of rock the 60s-90s LIVE on new year's eve! it will be a kick!!

and happy NEW DECADE! mark stevens

Real..or Fake??

as we kick into our Shake Rattle and Rock big giveaways this week on 98.1 KKFM...time to ponder the question Real or Fake? Christmas Trees of course...what did you think I meant? As a kid , it was always real trees..bought from the corner tree guy(see Christmas Story the movie)..as the kids left the house, my mom went artificial.

Remember that weird phase of the aluminum trees and those crazy colors? pink and white..yikes!

Of course nothing beats the smell of the the real thing..but they can dry out and turn into big time fire hazards..there are now a few places where you can actually RENT a tree online where it can be returned and re-planted...one company even offers a service where you can get the same tree every year if you want...I kinda like that idea..

But no matter which direction you go..real..fake..rental...just sit back and enjoy it..turn out the house lights and just sit and watch the tree lights ..amazing how relaxing that can be!

rock the holidays! mark stevens

we all love to GORGE ourselves on Thanksgiving...the average is about 3,000 calories consumed (about a day and half's worth or so)...and much of it is carbohydrates..(hence that sleepy feeling after the meal)...of course there is football and this year, the Broncos play the late game..the Lions and Cowboys have their traditional games. Lots of travel, and the Wednesday before turkey day is the biggest BAR SALES day of the year (yes even bigger than New Years Eve...

Love is like OXYGEN..well

not exactly....but in the San Diego area, this old dude has been knockin off banks right and left! It ain't no POINT BREAK escapade , with surfers wearing ex-presidents rubber masks..but the man , known affectionately as the GEEZER BANDIT is thought to be involved in several bank jobs. In his late 70s or 80s he also comes with his own PORTABLE OXYGEN TANK...how sweet is this old dude??

I know times are tough..but wow. OR ..OR MAYBE..this is just a rouse...maybe this is someone in fairly elaborate disguise. if so...frickin BRILLANT...

whatever the case..the GEEZER BANDIT is on the loose. He probably got inspired by something he saw on CSI..cuz ya know, old people love that show. I wonder if the robberies peak at just past "earlybird" specials at FURR's ??

not sure how this happened, but a team at DUKE, studying water repellent drop behaviour(whoa, dude....) , using high speed photography, has revealed the shape of the legendary "fun" Beatle RINGO STARR. THey essentially bounced a drop of water off a leaf...and the photographed the resultant "bounce:... And guess what? it DOES look like him. Check it out. Think these guys have spent a little too much time in the Yellow Submarine?

I WON"T be Ignored!!!!

SOOOOOO...yet another tawdry , uncomfortable and honestly puzzling story about an office romance gone bad. First it was David Letterman and his ongoing affair with a co-worker..and the resulting attempted blackmail, 2 million dollar "fake" check , the public admission and apology. Letterman probably did the best he could with all of this, and the resulting damage has been fairly well mitigated. I know I still feel kinda weird when i hear of another "sex scandal" in the news and I wonder how Dave will handle it. But all in all..this one could have been a lot worse.

BUT NOW---we get Steve Phillips (now formerly) of ESPN and his ..."odd" affair with this very young and , let's be honest, uhhhhh ..not the most photogenic co-worker. The great part of this one though..is how all "Fatal Attraction" this Brooke girl has gone..letters and threats to the wife..calling forth the chilling Glenn Close mantra of all stalker mantras "I ...WON'T...BE......IGNORED!!!! " it STILL to this day makes the skin crawl...

Look...rare is the office romance that ever works out..ESPECIALLY if you are married and ya know..have something to lose..just AMP that up about 100x if you are someone famous or have money ...or both...

LET THIS BE A LESSON to us all..meanwhile..is that rabbit I smell on the stove? ummm.

Who Cares!!!

The nominees came out for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Class of 2009 and I say Who Cares?! Why? Where is Alice Cooper? He has been elligable since nearly it's conception and he has yet to be even NOMINATED! This is supposed to be artists that had a lasting contribution to Rock and Roll and no Alice Cooper?!?!? Think of all the things that make Rock and Roll cool; Who was the first to use amazing theatrics in his show? Alice Cooper. Who was the first to push our imagination beyond normal? Alice Cooper. Who was the first to use heavy make-up and costuming? Alice Cooper. Who was the first to concieve the Rock opera? Alice Cooper. Who was the first Glam rocker? Alice Cooper. Who was the first to employ what they now call "goth"? Alice Cooper. Who was the first to choreograph an outrageous stage show that left the audience saying "WHOA!"? Alice Cooper. Who was the first "shock rocker"? Alice Cooper. And we haven't even started to talk about all the Progressive and Art Rockers (Emerson Lake And Palmer, Yes, Peter Gabriel era Genesis, etc.) that haven't been nominated.. .and yet they can induct Rap and hip-hop arrtists?!?!?!?! This is more of a political sham then the Grammy's. Like I said, "Who Cares?!" Rock On - Coda

the Ultimate HAPPY MEAL??

soooo the things you find on eBAY...apparently this is a "chicken McNugget" ..which came out of the deep fryer with a notable resemblance to something else. I am not sure how McNuggets are even made...or what exactly is in them. Some kind of mysterious "white meat" ..which now takes on a whole new meaning. so the question is ..how much would you pay for this phallic phun bite?? and if you would buy it online...then what? put it in a special glass enclosed display? airtight and sealed so as to preserve the inherent
thrust bust? :) well no matter what you pay...don't get shafted!! or better yet from 16 Candles..."no more yanky my wanky...the donger needs FOOD" just eat the damn thing!

TWO DAYS

Eight years ago, that ii-fated Tuesday morning, the Mark Bros morning show was in the studio as usual, yakkin about stuff that probably was not that important. I do remember that the main focus of the discussion that morning was Eddie Mac of the Broncos, who had broken a leg that Monday night game, in ironically, New York. It was early , rolling into the 6:30 am half hour, when a listener told us "that we'd better get CNN on"...quickly turning on the TV we all watched, jaws agape as the smoke billowed from that first tower strike. Trying to figure out what was going on like everybody else. Then, minutes later, the second tower. And then...the Pentagon. And the air was out of the room..we switched over to the network news feed and all stood there as the towers fell and that enormous dust and debris cloud engulfed the streets. No one said anything.

I remember later that day too..coming home to my east side house..where normally you could hear planes flying overhead taking off and landing at the airport. The silence was deafening and chilling. Except for the sound of the military jets high above, all was quiet. People were in their homes watching the endless loops of the crashing towers and horrendous loss of life. The next day on KKFM was somber and news filled and we spent the day taking calls and letting people tell their stories which was emotionally difficult by the end of the show. Finally on 9/13 we decided we needed to get out and the entire Citadel cluster of radio stations had a massive fund raiser in front of our stations ..where listeners responded like nothing I have ever seen or likely will never see again. close to $500,000 raised and more importantly people wanted to GET OUT and come and talk and touch other people. Still to this day the emotions of that day are my strongest and most poignant of my entire radio career.

These days with the yelling and the uncivil behavior we have witnessed in the past few months , it would be nice to get back to the feelings of those TWO DAYS.

HiYa-This past weekend I bought a boombox and went to visit one of our challenged listeners Dean.. He lives in a facility down in Pueblo and at 22 years old his life changed forever. He is now 52 and still has a severe brain injury after taking a truck head on at such an early age. He calls my show everyday and has since I started. I meant Dean 2 years ago when I went to Lowe's in Pueblo, he got his caregiver to take him out to meet me. That meant so much to both of us. Dean just recently went through a back surgery and at the moment is in a wheel chair, but I am pretty confident that he will be walking with a walker in no time at all. While I was there I meant his roommate Derrick who is in a wheel chair after losing all feeling in his legs at 13 and is now 29. It made me think that we often take each other for granted and all of the little things that we tend to make big mole hills out of are for what? We need to let the little things stay little and the big things stay big.. I thought I had a picture of my trip to see Dean but I guess I didn't save it on my cell phone, which really upsets me. I look forward to another trip to Pueblo to see my friend. Take time each day to appreciate and love the ones you are with for the worst thing ever would be to suffer and brain injury and not be the way you once were and KNOW IT!

Jay doesn't make the Cut--ler

Okay...i know its the first pre-season game and all, but STILL..how gratifying was it to see Mr I WANT A TRADE NOW Jay Cutler thrashing around in that game against Buffalo? Granted his replacement here in Denver , Kyle Orton,--ehhhh...not so much either. BUT..we didn't expect him to be "the savior" of the franchise. Cutler rolls into Chi-town with HUGE expectations...and no Brandon Marshall as well..Cutler looked confused..overthrew receivers and then (true to form) blamed one of his own Devon Hester for not making a better effort to catch a ball. ahhh yeah...Jay. no doubt dude is talented and will probably play very well...but for this first game, it was nice to see.
Still pointing toward that Aug.30th game in Denver..now that will be fun.

Wishing they could find a better way to keep ticket prices down other than charcging $9 and up for draft beer! {geesh} Spent most of it kickin around town until I went to the Hawiian Tropic State finals in Cripple Creek last Saturday. (YEAH ABABY!) Those pictures are yet to come. Rock On - Coda

HiYa~ Hope you had a nice weekend. Some of my friends and I went to the Craft Lager Festival yesterday and had a blast.. Jason bought us all pretzel necklaces and random people wanted to eat my necklace.. I shared because I am a good sport but also ate pretzels off of one side as to not mix spit with random peeps:) This picture is of me and my guy Bryan he was gracious enough to be the dd since he doesn't drink beer.. Luck for us 'cause we were smashed by the time it was over. Here is to a great week ahead.

Hey
Not only are we having to deal with that bobcat in north Colorado Springs..but now rabid skunks...So don't let the kids sleep outdoors at night and try to keep your pets in at night ..I think they should offer a reward on the skunks.

Hey Hey ..Paula

NO! say it ain't so American Idol! NOW who do we have to kick around? Paula Abdul has tweeted (don't ya love the ridiculousness of that word?) that she was unable to reach agreement on a new contract with Idol ,and now our favorite space cadet/judge will be leaving the show. The new judge from last season Kara, though, is set to return. Paula has taken her lumps over the years for being not quite "there" all the time...but lets' face it..many times that has been ALL that has made Idol watching bearable. My all time favorite Paula moment will always been when she was critiquing one contestant for a performance HE HADN"T GIVEN YET!! :)0 all time classic...so many odd comments, so many wandering remarks...it just won't be the same. and yes there were those special moments when for whatever reason Paula's synapses all fired and connections were made and something cogent and actually...instructive and intuitive was spoken! but it was mostly the "other" Paula we'll remember the most. you go girl!

The RIght to BARE arms??

wow...this picture of Madonna on the left is SCARY! i mean look, she is 50 and in great shape..as a fellow 50-er...you gotta admire that. Apparently she is working out like 2 hours a day ( i do about an hour a day and it is TOUGH TOUGH) --12 hours a week ( i guess she rests on the 7th day). Coupled with that, she apparently is also on a very strict diet...no dairy..no spices or caffeine or alchohol...very lean...again if you are fighting the age battle as we all are...admirable. BUT as with anything..you can go too far..where is the fun in that? I mean we all like to treat ourselves to the occasional sweet or bad food ..just because! you just have to know where to stop..:) This week we got a sobering report on the obesity crisis in this country, and it is bad. But Madonna is demonstrating that going too far the OTHER way ..ehhhh not so much. eat less. move more. but have a little fun once in awhile, too!!

Hey Workforce
I live in the Rockrimmon area...and I think that Bobcat is still on the prowl. We have 2 cats and Monday afternoon one of our cats hadn't come home yet... then it became 9 o'clock still no sign of "Grayson"..then we heard this blood curdling scream...went outside with flashlights..couldn't find him...went to bed ..didn't sleep well...but Tuesday morning he finally showed up...looked like hell..fur all messed up..So we don't know exactly what happened...but if you can, keep your animals in at night or if they sleep outside, make sure that their sleeping arrangments include something with sides and a roof...

Animal Magnetism

With the news of the death of the cuddly "Taco Bell" dog (Gidget) at age 15..it begs the question ..who is or was the best animal advertiser? Was it the great campaign for
9Lives with Morris the Cat? maybe Budweiser's Spuds McKenzie? of course the Taco Bell chihuahua...and maybe the current king..the Geico Gecko , CGI'd though he is...there's Duke for Bush's baked beans...the bandaged crows for Windex...Sasquatch for Jack Links..
there were the classic polar bears of Coke....the elegant Clydesdales from Budweiser...
those are some that come to mind...we love our animals and... they work!!

Cats....control....our....minds..

new research shows that cats use a certain kind of purr mixed with a higher meow sound to make their owners do their bidding. Why are we not surprised by this? long has the debate raged on cats vs dogs as household pets...with fervor on both sides. But no one has ever accused dogs of being able to exercise mind control techniques..full disclosure i am a dog person..always have been. But our family had cats too ...some were great..others were..well creatures sent from Hell. If you have seen the movie UP (which by now i hope you have) they nailed dog behavior dead on. SQUIRREL!! hard to imagine any world domination plans emerging from those brains....but cats on the other hand..
i always knew they were up to .....something.

Hi Chuck Squire here..
If you are goin' campin and building a fire to cook up some beans, don't sit to close to your fire after eatin those beans.. and ..please be sure to put out your campfire properly....use water then stir the ashes...and repeat....You don't want to be responsible for the damage a wildfire can cause....Happy camping and bean eatin!!!
