HiYa- It is always a sad day in the music industry when you hear of someone passing away.. In this case it was the Legendary Billy Powell from Lynyrd Skynyrd. I remember seeing them last in Florida on the East Coast.. One of my dearest friends Jade and I took the trip over from the West Coast and jammed to their incredible music. Jade lost her mom at an early age and her mom played her Skynyrd like no ones business she then aquired a love of FREEDOM ROCK and since her best friend (me)worked in radio I took her to the show.. It was an emotional moment for both of us and after hearing the news about Billy, I just had to take it to the blog and give my heart felt sympathies to Billy's family and the rest of Skynyrd and also to my dearest Jade. I love her and miss her much and know that her mama is looking down on me smiling for thinking of them both.

Cha-Ching!
What a weekend THAT was!! I know, I was really looking forward to getting Ruby-the-Red Springer out on the road, but with temps in the teens... well, I don't think so.
So Saturday I'm kinda mopin around the house with little enthusiasm and the wife says, Let's Go to Cripple Creek! The last thing I need right now is to donate more money to the Cripple Creek Municiple fund but we did need to get away from the kids for a while. So as is the custom, we find a hundred dollars each and headed up the pass to the Gold Rush. Only five minutes there and she hits a $600 jackpot! So I head off to lose another $20 bucks and come back to find her just in time to see her hit another $600 jackpot! This time I insist she banks some in MY POCKET... and then go off to continue losing. I come back to check on her about 30 minutes later and she's waiting on the boss to come and cash out her THIRD $600 jackpot(2 on the same machine).
There's a little inside agreement between us that whenever one of us hits a jackpot, the other one "owes one" to the winner when we get to our room. So I asked her if she needed them all in one night and she says, "...but of course!" *whoa*
So we went up the pass with $100 each and came back down after 4 hours of beating up the slots with $1400! And nope, didn't get a lot of sleep that night either. :-)~
So here's to "loose slots!" and until next time, Rock On! Coda

HiYa- Hope you had a wonderful weekend. I am super excited with the amount of concerts coming into Colorado and it really all kicks off with "An Evening with Yes" at the Paramount Feb12th. And after that it seems like the bands are using a revolving door coming in and out of Colorado. You can always visit our concert calendar and buy tickets right off of KKFM.COM or better yet be listening for KKFM Workforce invitations to the show. At the moment I am preparing for a big night of TV, 24 is back and Jack Bauer loves me he just doesn't know it yet. Are you a fan of 24? Let me know and we will chat it up the day after the show airs.

Joaquin Phoenix Does WHAT!!??
This last week, I was very disturbed to hear that "former actor" Joaquin Phoenix has decided to become a rapper. Sure enough, there's footage online of his debut performance. The best part is the fall off the stage!! Supposedly, Ben Affleck's little brother, Casey, is filming Joaquin's transformation from actor to rapper for a future documentary. Could this be true, or is it an elaborate publicity stunt? What do you think?

This Cold Weather Blows!!
The forecast said "partly sunny & mild" this weekend. They were WAY off on that one. I was hoping for one last decent weekend before hunkerin' down for another semester in school. Those days in the 60's last week caused some spring fever. I guess that's just how goes.

What Matters Most
This week, a very close friend of mine lost her dad. It was one of those moments (because he had been in pain and very ill for a long time) where you say "at least the suffering is over". But it is easier said than done. Our own Jim Coda recently lost his dad as well. These are the moments in life that challenge us, that make us sad and reflective and in the end grateful for the life we have.
One of the reasons I came back to Colorado last year was to be closer to my mom (who is getting older but still doing pretty well) down in Durango, and to be closer to my brother's family in Denver. Not to mention the radio family that I have here as well, which helped me during my own father's passing a little over 8 years ago.
As we move through a difficult time in the country, there is a lot of uncertainty out there. Jobs are being lost..houses are being shuttered, businesses down the street are yelling at us with GOING OUT OF BUSINESS signs. It is not going to be easy to get out of this one. and like Gina I am hopeful that our new administration can begin the process. BUt through it all remember that family matters most! Take some time to connect or even reconnect with yours. Make a call..send a card or an e-mail....say hi in person...go see a school play or recital , or just spend some time hangin out with the family. Its what matters most. See ya on the radio.

HiYa- I am so PROUD to be an American today.. We made history today as Obama took the highest OATH of service to our country and became the 44th President. In between spinning the tunes for you today, I watched him be sworn in. I had goose bumps and was clapping. In my honest opinion it doesn't matter who you voted for in the election, what matters is collectively America made the RIGHT decision and I can not wait to see what President Obama brings to the table.. On a chick note, I think his wife and First Lady Michelle looked GREAT and their kids were cute as cute can be. Let us all take a moment to think about the PROFOUND Effect we made in the world and will be making in the years to come.. GO OBAMA!!

KKFM on ICE!

WOW! What a great weekend that was! Started out at the 1st Annual Ice on the Avenue festival down in Old Colorado City hangin out with a bunch of the KKFM Workforce. Mike the Ice Sculpture artist was very cool and even agreed to carve out the new KKFM logo in ice. festivals like this are always a little scary to start out and being the "1st Annual" the organizers were a little worried, but ended up with twice the amount they thought they would see Saturday. So a big Kudos to YOU that KKFM Workforce for coming out. I'm thinking this will be a great year for get-outta-the-house-and-do-something kind of events... especially the free ones like this. Territory Days and Spring Spree should be large and of course KKFM will keep you posted on the good ones as they come up.
Then I headed down to the Home and Garden Show on Sunday to look over ideas for something to dig into on the house this summer. Lots of entries in the New Deck giveaway we are doing with Rocky Mountain Forest Products this year. Remember, if you're sportin embarassing wood, get a picture in on this one and we may be hooking you up in time for BBQ season.
Can you believe this weather?! Hope you are getting out to enjoy it. I've decided that Ruby the Red Springer has to come out of storage as long as it is going to be this nice. If you know of anybody that is going to take advantage of this weather and put a ride together, make sure someone let's me know at coda@kkfm.com.

Revenge of the birds
Can you believe that (former Air Force we might add) pilot landed that plane like that in the Hudson? and what about the inevitable onslaught of media coverage? as usual there was lots of speculation and endless chatter with not that much information to share...but it was one of those news events tailor made for the 24/7 news cycles. It had to be harrowing for people in NYC looking out their windows and seeing a plane skimming the river! I guess a lot more of us will be paying extra attention to those flight safety instructions now. AND---the other "birds" getting theirs...what in the world ? the ARIZONA CARDINALs in the Super Bowl? really? it was nearly an "all bird" bowl too with the Ravens almost getting there..you know NBC (which has the Super Bowl this year) heaved a big sigh of relief with the Steelers getting in (going after number 6 too). One year too late for the desert birds..in the "big toaster" (did i hear that yesterday at some point?) of their home dome...The Cards appear to be this year's "team of destiny". Did you see any of the HBO inaugural concert stuff? i loved it! Springsteen..,,Mellencamp,..Bon Jovi ...Garth Brooks...Stevie Wonder ...U2....and the usual cast of hollywood stars and 'lets ...i love this new energy coming into Washington...let's hope that things can get turned around! I believe it will...aighhhht dog? see ya on the radio!

Here we are a week after I got back and a week intro the "batting order" for the KKFM air-staff! I like it! What do you think? Mark is a blast.. maybe now that he is back he might start riding his Harley again! I've known him for 7+ years and I've never sen him on his pretty Harley he has parked in his garage.
Big weekend coming! Ice on the avenue will be cool! There are going to be ice sculpture artists carving up 300lbs blocks of ice! I thought it would be cool to have them carve me. Then as the sun was melting it, I could finally see what I would look like if I lost some weight!
Ron White is at the Pikes Peak center Sturday too! We have some tickets if you need them to this sold out show. Just come find Gina and I Satursday to grab yours!

Stevens here....really?
Thanks to Gina and Coda for the shout-outs ! This whole thing began back in late summer 1985 (as a long time KKFMer reminded me yesterday). We created the Mark Bros show in summer of 1988--and it went til the end of 2002...14 years! After a detour through Texas and Washington DC--I came back to Colorado this past October to be closer to my mom (who lives in Durango) and my brother and his family in Denver. With that move came the chance to fill in for Coda on vacation and do some weekends here at KKFM. It was such a kick that somehow someway the powers that be decided to let me do it everyday from 3 to 7pm, starting this past Monday. I wanted to thank all the callers since i have been back..and e-mailers too....it gives me pause to know that in some small way we have touched your lives in one way or another..good or bad :)) To me this is the beginning of the next phase of my 25 yr plus radio career...things are tough out there for everyone, including the radio biz too...BUT the reason we do this is because we love it! Radio remains the best way to reach out and touch people...to connect in ways the other media cannot..and without a doubt, southern Colorado has some of the greatest most loyal listeners I have seen! It is great to be bak in the KKFM family again...check back as i will be posting random thoughts and old mark bros memories too ! Again , thanks to everyone for making this return to KKFM such a heartwarming thing for me! and now....let's PARTY!

Back Again!!!
A week out (again) and back I am! Not vacation this time, family troubles I had to go take care of. This time, instead of flying both ways, I drove back from Florida. Maaaaannnnn... if I never drive through north Texas and New Mexico again, it will still be TOO DAMN SOON! Empty, flat, boarded up towns and then outta nowhere, a WALMART!? Who is there to use it?! There was one little town in far north Texas about 150 miles from the New Mexico border... as we came up to it, was a sign that said "pop. 364." I look at the little woman and say, "What would you do out here in the middle of nowhere?" She starts giggling and says, "THAT!" It was a freakin porn emporium with adult toys, videos and screening rooms! :-) *maybe they are feeling the population slip too*
Strange tho, everytime I take time off, things change. Now it's move me to the last half of Gina's show and we welcome back Mark Stevens! *how cool is that* e is going to carry the End Of The Day Triple PLay torch, so keep those ideas comin! And as far as me in the early afternoon... hmmmmmmmmmmm.... we will have to think up something. I'm open for ideas, just send them to coda@kkfm.com
